Why Wood Pellets from Indian Farms Could Be the Clean Fuel Our Power Plants Need

Every winter, North India faces severe air pollution. One major reason is the burning of crop stubble in states like Punjab and Haryana. To tackle this, the government has asked coal-based thermal power plants to mix biomass pellets with coal — a process called biomass co-firing.

Most of these pellets are made from agricultural waste like rice husk and straw. Farmers are encouraged to sell crop residue instead of burning it, and the SAMARTH Mission has been launched to support this effort.

The idea is good — but the solution has a problem.


Why Agri-Waste Pellets Are Not Enough

Crop-based biomass has some serious limitations:

  • It is available only for a few months in a year
  • Collecting and transporting it is costly and difficult
  • Farmers often earn very little by selling residue
  • Penalizing farmers for stubble burning has not worked well
  • Power plants struggle with irregular fuel supply

These problems are not unique to India. Many countries have faced the same issues.


What the World Is Doing Differently

In countries like Denmark, the UK, Japan, and South Korea, power plants use wood pellets instead of crop waste.

Denmark, for example, produces most of its electricity from wind and biomass — mainly wood pellets. These pellets come from managed forests and farm-grown trees, making them a reliable and clean energy source.


The Big Irony: India Already Has the Answer

What many people don’t know is that India already grows a huge amount of wood on farms.

This system is called agroforestry — farmers grow trees along with crops. States like Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh have seen major benefits from it.

The Silent Agroforestry Revolution in India

India’s agroforestry success has been repeatedly acknowledged internationally, including by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

In fact:
👉 More than 94% of India’s wood comes from farm-grown trees, not forests.

This wood already supports industries like:

  • Paper and packaging
  • Plywood and furniture
  • Construction
  • Matchsticks and briquettes

Yet, when the idea of using wood pellets in power plants is raised, it is often dismissed with the claim that “India does not have enough wood.”
That claim is simply not true.


Why Wood Pellets Make Sense for Power Plants

Wood pellets offer many advantages:

  • More energy per kilogram than crop waste pellets
  • Available all year, not just after harvest
  • Easier to store and transport
  • Very low ash (around 2%)
  • Ash can be used as fertilizer
  • Work smoothly in existing coal power plant boilers

For power plants, wood pellets are cleaner, safer, and more reliable.


Global Trends Point in One Direction

Across the world, wood pellets are becoming a key clean fuel:

  • Europe has converted many coal plants to run on wood pellets
  • The UK’s Drax plant is now the world’s largest biomass power station
  • Japan and South Korea are rapidly increasing pellet imports
  • After the Ukraine war, Europe turned to biomass for energy security

These are not experiments — they are large-scale, proven solutions.


A Missed Opportunity for India

India is trying to solve air pollution and reduce coal use. But by focusing only on crop waste, it is ignoring a ready-made, sustainable solution.

Agroforestry-based wood pellets can:

  • Reduce stubble burning
  • Give farmers steady income
  • Cut air pollution
  • Make power generation cleaner
  • Strengthen India’s energy security

The Bottom Line

India doesn’t lack wood.
India lacks awareness and policy focus.

Wood pellets from farm-grown trees can be a clean, reliable fuel for thermal power plants.
The solution is already growing in our fields — we just need to recognize it.
