The Poplar tree is widely cultivated in farms or along the boundary of farms in northern India. In local market ( Yamunanagar ), Poplar logs are categorized as below
- High quality: Latest variety of poplar tree i.e W109 ,w110, w111 ,w112 are priced much higher than others. Currently, these are priced around 1300 Rs/qtl ( above 14 inch circumference of wood logs) .
Identification:
In comparison to same volume of other poplar wood logs , they have 5-12 % less weight and hence , priced higher. The peeling of these poplar logs results in good quality wood sheets ( core).

- Middle quality: Older variety such as G48 etc, are priced around 1070 to 1230 Rs/qtl. The Prices range is big as many other Quality factors such as cracks, ganth , teda affects the prices.

- Low quality: Much older poplar variety such as G-3, which are generally found in Bihar now, are priced low. Currently, farmer can expect around +950 Rs/qtl in yamunanagar for such wood logs.

Unlike any other agriculture crop, Tree farmers resort to an easy method of selling trees as a standing crop. Farmers prefer to sell to local thekedar /contractor as it appears a hassle-free work but at the cost of losses of which he is unaware. It is observed that most farmers in UP, Bihar sell poplar at half the market price of tree due to ignorance. Currently , the Sokta ( 8 inch to 14 inch of wood log) is priced around 700 Rs/qtl in Yamunanagar, Haryana.
Industries which consumes poplar wood logs are plywood , paper industry , Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) , saw mills , wood wools, wooden boxes .
Firewood: Leaves , roots ,small branches of poplar are accepted as fuel in boilers, brick making factories and so on. Usually , it is priced as 480 Rs/quintal in Yamunanagar, Haryana.
